Getting to Uppsala
Travel guide to get to Uppsala—especially if you’re starting from Stockholm (which most travelers do).
Stockholm is just the main hub, not a requirement. If you’re flying in, Arlanda to Uppsala is often the smartest route.
Train
It is easy to travel between Uppsala and Stockholm by train – you can take a commuter train with SL or a regional train with SJ or Mälartåg, the journey takes between 30-50 minutes depending on which option you choose.
Choose a climate-smart travel option when visiting Uppsala! There are good train connections to several cities in Sweden. Search for your trip with the train companies to see prices and timetables.
From Stockholm

How to do it
- Go to Stockholm Central Station
- Take a train to Uppsala Central Station
- No transfers needed
Ticket options
- Operators: SJ, Mälartåg, SL (commuter train)

- Buy via apps, machines, or online
Tip:
- SJ / Mälartåg = faster (~40 min)
- SL commuter train = cheaper but slower (~55 min)
Bus
From Stockholm

- Departs from Stockholm Cityterminalen
Long-distance buses
Companies like FlixBus connect Uppsala with multiple cities, not just Stockholm.
Car
If you are travelling by car from Stockholm and Arlanda Airport, take the E4 north towards Uppsala, signposted towards Sundsvall. At Uppsala, take exit 186 towards Uppsala S and then follow the signs to the city centre. The E4 highway (north–south Sweden) is a major route.
If you are travelling from Enköping, take Route 55 north, upon arrival in Uppsala, turn right at Enköpingsvägen and continue into the city centre.
From Gävle, take the E4 south towards Uppsala/Stockholm. At Uppsala, take exit 188 towards 55/Strängnäs/288/Östhammar. At the first roundabout, take the first exit onto Route 55/72 towards Strängnäs and then continue straight ahead at the first roundabout. Then follow the signs to the city centre.
